What is your training completion rate?

Training that doesn’t get completed means money down the drain not to mention a lost opportunity to build the capabilities of your workforce. With instructor-led training, completion rates tend to be high because finishing the course is often just a function of sitting through the presentation.

With online training, the responsibility for training is transferred to the learner. There are many benefits to this shift in accountability, but for most learners the benefits come with the challenge of fitting in training with all of their other job responsibilities.

WHAT THIS TELLS YOU

The Course Completion Rate lets you know what portion of the courses you have assigned to Learners that have been completed.

HOW IT IS MEASURED

The Course completion metric looks back 90 days from today and to all courses due in the future. We look at the total number of courses your Learners* have completed within that time frame and divide that by the total number of courses due in the past 90 days plus courses that are due in the future that have already been completed. Here is an example:

In this case, there are 3 complete courses. We divide that by the number of courses due in the past 90 days, regardless of completion status (3 in this example) PLUS the number of courses due in the future that are complete (1 in this example) for a total of 4 in this example. Then we multiply the result by 100% to get the Completion Rate in a percentage form.

If all courses due in the past 90 days have been completed, the Completion Rate will be 100%. By including courses due in the future that have been completed, the Completion Rate also reflects work your Learners have completed that is not yet due but does not “penalize” the metric for work not completed that is not yet due.

In other words, a 100% Completion Rate does not mean that your Learners do not have more training that needs to be completed in the future. The Completion Rate metric must be considered along with all past due courses as well as courses that are due soon.

CALCULATING FASTLITE’S 96% COURSE COMPLETION RATE

• Number of completed courses due in the past 90 days: 347
• Number of completed courses due in the future: 66
• Number of courses due in the past 90 days: 366
• (347 + 66) / (366 + 66) = 0.96 * 100% = 96%
