What It Is Used For

  • To show the physical flow of the work, people, or paperwork in a process.

When to Use It

  • To help identify process steps that can be eliminated or improved.
  • To show improvements in layout (“before” & “after” workflows).
  • To help identify process bottlenecks.

Important Notes

  • Any time there is a crossover point in the process workflow, that is evidence of waste in the process and should be looked at for improvement.
  • Color-code the paths for people, paperwork, and the product itself.
